On Dec. 19, 2011, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published proposed regulations pursuant to ยง6002 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as the Physician Payments Sunshine Act (Sunshine Act). The proposed rule provides details on the process and requirements for the reporting of payments made by pharmaceutical, biological, medical device and medical supply manufacturers to physicians and teaching hospitals, as well as the reporting of financial relationships between physicians, manufacturers and group purchasing organizations (GPOs).
