The striking silhouette of Gateway Plaza, downtown Richmond’s newest corporate high-rise, is featured in a Richmond Times-Dispatch article highlighting McGuireWoods’ recent move from One James Center to its new building at 800 Canal Street. The August 23 piece, titled “Gateway Plaza office tower opens in downtown Richmond,” features an interview with McGuireWoods Executive Director Robert Couture, who speaks to the years of planning and hard work that went into the move.
“We lived it and breathed it,” says Couture in quoted material. “We started this process in February 2011, knowing our lease would be up in August 2015, but we needed that much time. Anytime you build a project of this magnitude on time and under budget, well, let’s just say, it doesn’t happen very often.”
McGuireWoods was the driving force behind the construction of Gateway Plaza, and will also be the primary tenant with more than 600 lawyers and staff occupying 8 ½ floors of the building.
“Other projects have been proposed for the site,” says Couture. “The reason we liked it was because it is a gateway into the city over the Manchester Bridge.”
