The widely read legal news service Law360 recently named McGuireWoods as a sports “Practice Group of the Year” for 2015. In its Jan. 21 article, Law360 profiles the firm’s work representing sports industry clients in the United States and abroad in matters ranging from contract negotiations to an international corruption investigation.
The story covers the representation by Chairman Richard Cullen and a senior team of McGuireWoods white-collar litigators of Joseph “Sepp” Blatter, the president of FIFA, in connection with U.S. and Swiss criminal investigations of soccer’s worldwide governing body, as well as internal FIFA proceedings.
The story highlights the work of Charlotte partner Robert Muckenfuss, who helped NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Clint Bowyer negotiate a deal with a new race team in 2015. Richard Grant, managing partner of the firm’s Los Angeles – Century City office, discussed his work negotiating Kia Motors’ sponsorship deals with the NBA and superstars LeBron James and Blake Griffin. And Charlotte partner Kevin McGinnis explained his work advising a client on the financing of the new Atlanta Falcons stadium, as well as debt refinancing transactions for the English soccer franchise Manchester United.
This marks the second year in a row that McGuireWoods has received Practice Group of the Year recognition from Law360. The firm’s Government Investigations and White Collar Litigation Department was a white collar Practice Group of the Year for 2014.
