McGuireWoods London associate Adam Penman wrote a July 8, 2021, article for People Management magazine about the prevalence in the UK of workplace discrimination and harassment on the basis of sexual orientation.
In the article, “The Latest on Sexual Orientation Discrimination in the Workplace,” Penman noted that despite some progress, the issue remains a risk for employers. As an example, he cited a recent case where an employment tribunal awarded an individual compensation for discrimination and harassment he experienced from his employer and co-workers after he revealed he was gay.
“The case reminds employers of the importance of treating staff with dignity and respect and to adhere to clearly laid-out procedures,” he wrote.
Penman also detailed important ways employers could and should be proactive in their support of LGBTQ+ staff.
