He will be the third McGuireWoods partner to have served as President of ACTEC, joining Ron Aucutt (2003-04) and Dennis Belcher (2009-10).
ACTEC is a professional organization of approximately 2,600 lawyers from throughout the United States and other countries who are elected to membership by their peers on the basis of professional reputation and ability in the field of trusts and estates and on the basis of having made substantial contributions to that field through lecturing, writing, teaching, and bar activities.
In addition to contributing articles to many other publications, Skip writes a bi-monthly column for the American Bankers Association Trust Newsletter, and he is a co-author of the Estate Planning Manual (2001 edition), Fiduciary Law and Trust Activities Guide, and Tax Law Guide, all published by the American Bankers Association. Since 2001, he has been the co-presenter of the monthly teleconferences on estate planning and trust administration topics presented by the American Bankers Association. He is a member of the CCH Estate Planning Advisory Committee and the author of the Estate Planning with Life Insurance volume of the CCH Financial Planning Library. He has also served on the editorial board of Trusts & Estates and from 2003 to 2012 chaired the editorial board of Trust & Investments. Skip is a member of the faculty of the National Trust School and the National Graduate Trust School, at which he has taught for over 25 years, and was an adjunct professor at Northwestern University Law School from 1983 to 2005. He is currently an adjunct professor at the University of Virginia School of Law. He is also Chair Emeritus of the Duke University Estate Planning Council.
Skip has a Bachelor’s degree from Princeton, a Master’s degree from Yale, and a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. He and his wife Beth have two adult sons.
