McGuireWoods Houston partner Demetra Liggins was recognized for Collaborative Leadership in Corporate Counsel magazine’s 2022 Women, Influence & Power in Law Awards. The awards honor general counsel, in-house leaders and law firm partners who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing the empowerment of women in law.
An accomplished bankruptcy lawyer, Liggins has more than two decades of experience in business finance and restructuring for public and private companies. She has forged strong relationships with companies in major industries, including healthcare systems, oil and gas companies, retail corporations, financial institutions, partnerships and private equity funds.
Liggins is a frequent speaker on diversity and inclusion in the business community and the wider legal profession. Based on her experiences as Black woman in “Big Law,” she co-founded Corporate Homie, an innovative platform that helps women and people of color build a community of support to advance in the corporate world. Among her many honors, Liggins recently was named a “Diversity and Inclusion Champion” by Texas Lawyer in the Texas Legal Awards.
“Over the course of my career, I have benefited from mentors who took an interest in my success, and I relish the opportunity to pay that benefit forward,” Liggins said. “It is gratifying to be honored with peers who are dedicated to helping women thrive in our profession.”
The honorees will be recognized at an awards dinner on Oct. 18, 2022, as part of the Women, Influence & Power in Law Conference in Washington, D.C.
“Demetra is an outstanding lawyer and leader who is making a difference by helping women and professionals of color find pathways to success,” said Elaine Sanderlin Ryan, co-chair of McGuireWoods’ Women Lawyers Network. “We congratulate her for this well-deserved national recognition.”
Alicia Baiardo, co-chair of the Women Lawyers Network, added: “This honor is a fitting tribute to Demetra’s passion for helping others achieve their full potential, whether in the legal profession or the business world.”
