McGuireWoods Charlotte partner Robert Muckenfuss was named to North Carolina Lawyers Weekly’s 2023 Power List for Business Defense. The Power List recognizes top lawyers in a particular practice area who are leaders in their field and known for their experience and accomplishments.
Muckenfuss, one of only 14 attorneys across North Carolina selected for the honor, chairs McGuireWoods’ Complex Commercial Litigation Department. He handles “bet-the-business” matters and manages multifront litigation threats, often coordinating large teams. He also advises clients in the motorsports industry, serving as primary outside counsel for the first-ever Drivers Advisory Council in NASCAR.
In a profile published in North Carolina Lawyers Weekly’s special section, Muckenfuss said clerking for Jean H. Toal, the South Carolina Supreme Court’s first woman chief justice, helped put him on a path to success.
“Justice Toal was a pioneer, as a litigator and a judge, and was a major influence on my decision to pursue complex business litigation,” he said.
Muckenfuss told North Carolina Lawyers Weekly that authenticity is essential to succeeding in the legal profession and enjoying the experience.
“Litigation is about helping people and companies as either plaintiff or defendant,” Muckenfuss said. “To be successful, you can’t fake it, you must be yourself and enjoy the rush of competition.”
