The National Black Lawyers selected McGuireWoods partners Ava Lias-Booker and Jack White as Top 100 Lawyers in their respective jurisdictions for 2023.
In addition, partners Brandi Howard and Jocelyn Mitnaul Mallette and associates Chauna Abner, Paul Harris, Tevin Hopkins, Brogan Chubb, Noriya Shahadat and Evan Tucker were recognized as Top 40 Under 40 lawyers.

Lias-Booker, former managing partner of McGuireWoods’ Baltimore, Maryland, office and past chair of the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee, was named to the National Black Lawyers’ list of Top 100 Lawyers in Maryland. She leads the Baltimore litigation practice with three decades of experience representing businesses in complex commercial and civil litigation.
White, managing partner of the firm’s Tysons, Virginia, office, was named to the list of Top 100 Lawyers in Washington, D.C. An accomplished trial lawyer and legal strategist, he focuses on civil litigation, regulatory enforcement and congressional investigations for clients in defense, technology, education, federal contracting and other business sectors.
Howard was named to the list of Top 40 Under 40 Lawyers in Washington, D.C. She represents corporate and individual clients in government investigations and complex commercial trial and appellate litigation.
Mallette was named to the list of Top 40 Under 40 Lawyers in North Carolina. Based in Raleigh, she represents businesses across industries in product liability claims, complex civil litigation and environmental litigation.
Abner, a Baltimore associate, was named to the list of Top 40 Under 40 Lawyers in Maryland. She represents businesses and individuals in commercial litigation, contractual disputes and financial litigation.
Harris, a Charlottesville associate, also was named to the list of Top 40 Under 40 Lawyers in Virginia. He represents companies in mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, platform and add-on acquisitions, leveraged buyouts, and other transformative and strategic transactions.
Hopkins, a Chicago associate, was named to the list of Top 40 Under 40 Lawyers in Illinois. He defends employers in employment-related disputes, including claims under Title VII, the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and state discrimination and sexual harassment suits.
Richmond associates Chubb, Shahadat and Tucker earned selections to the Top 40 Under 40 list for Virginia. Chubb represents companies in the medical device, retail and consumer product manufacturing industries in class actions and product liability disputes. Shahadat represents corporate defendants in mass tort and product liability matters. Tucker represents individual and corporate clients across industries in state and federal government investigations and litigation.
