McGuireWoods continues the expansion of its nationally recognized digital health and technology team with the arrival of partner Jennifer K. Shanley, who brings more than 14 years of in-house and private practice experience to the firm’s New York office.
Shanley provides regulatory guidance to industry clients including digital health providers; pharmaceutical, biologic and medical device manufacturers; clinical laboratories; pharmacies; health systems; hospitals; provider practice groups; skilled nursing facilities; home care agencies; health insurers; charitable foundations; and companies that support or invest in the healthcare industry.
Shanley advises clients on federal and state fraud and abuse compliance, health information privacy laws, and developing business models to comply with state licensure and corporate practice regulations. In addition, she represents underwriters and health industry issuers in preparing public filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and provides regulatory counseling associated with mergers and acquisitions, private equity and venture capital transactions, and public offerings.
Shanley comes to McGuireWoods from Cooley LLP. She previously served as an associate general counsel at Westchester Medical Center Health Network, a 1,700-bed healthcare system with nine hospitals.
“Jennifer excels at helping healthcare and life sciences clients at all stages of development navigate an increasingly complex regulatory landscape,” said Richard Viola, deputy managing partner of McGuireWoods’ corporate practice. “Her skill and insight enhance our capabilities in a dynamic market.”
Said Holly Buckley, chair of McGuireWoods’ Healthcare Department: “As our clients continue to increase their footprint in digital health, we remain focused on providing the market with a team that offers complementary market-leading capabilities and experience. Jennifer knows first-hand the compliance challenges clients must manage in order to achieve their business goals in this sector in particular. Her unique perspective and sound judgment will benefit industry clients immensely.”
Shanley’s arrival follows the recent additions of Washington, D.C., partners Kevin Madagan and Clint Narver, who have significant private practice and government experience in matters affecting U.S. Food & Drug Administration regulated industries.
McGuireWoods has earned numerous honors, including a nationwide ranking in Chambers USA for representing hospitals and other healthcare institutions in major corporate transactions, as well as regulatory and compliance matters. The firm is a dominant player in private equity deals involving physician practices, hospitals, outpatient and urgent-care providers, pharmacies, medical device manufacturers and distributors, and other healthcare services.
“I was drawn to McGuireWoods’ established reputation as a leader within the healthcare legal industry,” Shanley said. “The firm’s expansive regulatory experience provides an optimal platform for meeting the complex needs of clients within the healthcare industry. I am excited to join the team given its strong profile, tremendous talent and commitment to client service excellence.” Said Jeffrey Chapman, managing partner of the firm’s New York office: “Jennifer strengthens our healthcare and life sciences presence in New York and we are delighted to welcome her to the firm.”
