McGuireWoods and Charlotte partner Mark Kinghorn received awards for pro bono service during the Mecklenburg County Bar Association’s annual meeting May 21, 2024, in Charlotte.
The Council for Children’s Rights, an advocacy and legal services program for at-risk children, honored McGuireWoods as its Outstanding Law Firm. McGuireWoods has a longstanding relationship with the Council for Children’s Rights, one of the largest beneficiaries of pro bono services in the Charlotte area.
The organization is a partner with McGuireWoods and corporate clients in Charlotte Triage, a program that expands pro bono services to low-income residents by enabling the legal aid organizations to outsource work to private practice lawyers and in-house counsel. Through a partnership with the Council for Children’s Rights, Charlotte Triage expanded in 2023 to serve vulnerable children with special education needs.
Legal Aid of North Carolina presented Kinghorn with the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award for his Charlotte Triage work on housing and eviction defense matters. Kinghorn has served as a Charlotte Triage housing “champion” since the program’s inception in 2018. He also serves as pro bono co-leader for McGuireWoods’ Charlotte office.
“Pro bono service can have a powerful impact in our communities, especially when we collaborate with corporate clients and legal aid organizations to serve neighbors in need,” Kinghorn said. “We are proud to be honored by the Council for Children’s Rights and Legal Aid of North Carolina and look forward to continuing our partnership.”
