McGuireWoods lawyers and business professionals took part in a nationwide initiative led by longtime client Bank of America to support first responders and military veterans and honor those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
The firm partnered with Bank of America to lead pro bono legal clinics in Charlotte, Chicago, Jacksonville and Los Angeles on Sept. 11, 2024, assisting local police, firefighters, emergency medical workers, veterans and their families with essential legal documents such as wills and powers of attorney. Bank of America also organized “Wills for Heroes” clinics in six additional cities.
In Charlotte, nine McGuireWoods volunteers assisted first responders and veterans with wills and other legal documents in partnership with Bank of America and the North Carolina Bar Foundation. In Chicago, eight volunteers from the law firm provided legal assistance and five more served as witnesses and notaries. Nine McGuireWoods volunteers participated in the Jacksonville clinic and five served clients at the Los Angeles event.
A plenary session broadcast from Founders Hall in Charlotte featured remarks from John Macguire, a former U.S. Army officer and investment banker who helped first responders carry the body of a New York City Fire Department chaplain from the ruins of the World Trade Center’s South Tower on Sept. 11, 2001. “McGuireWoods is proud to support first responders and veterans in our communities and honor the memories of 9/11 heroes,” said Christopher Thanner, pro bono leader in the firm’s Jacksonville office and leader of the Sept. 11 Jacksonville clinic. “We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with Bank of America to serve men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting us.”
