Ryan is a partner in the firm’s Government Investigations and White Collar Litigation Department. A former United States Attorney with extensive leadership experience in the public and private sector, Ryan is uniquely poised to navigate complex government and corporate investigations, regulatory matters, and high-stakes white collar and commercial litigation across various industries. Known for keen insight and practical knowhow, Ryan provides clients with effective strategic guidance on compliance, risk mitigation, and litigation through a crisis, regulatory scrutiny, or government enforcement action.

Ryan rejoined the firm following his service as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. Appointed by the President and confirmed by the United States Senate, Ryan oversaw the investigation and litigation of all criminal and civil cases brought on behalf of the United States in a district of nearly 8 million people. As the chief federal law enforcement official in the district, Ryan led an office of approximately 250 prosecutors, civil litigators, appellate lawyers, and support personnel in its mission to enforce federal criminal law, advocate for the victims of crimes, and represent the United States’ interests in federal court. He oversaw matters involving domestic and international terrorism, public corruption, cybercrime, civil rights violations, whistleblower actions, financial and healthcare fraud, organized crime, narcotics trafficking, and gang violence.

Beyond the Northern District of Georgia, Ryan contributed to the Department of Justice’s national legal policy as a member of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee (AGAC), a select group of United States Attorneys who advised the Attorney General on policy matters. Ryan served as Vice-Chair of the AGAC’s Terrorism and National Security Subcommittee, leader of the Malign Foreign Influence Working Group, and as a member of the Office of Management and Budget Subcommittee. In addition to his Department of Justice leadership, Ryan served as a member of the interagency Domestic Terrorism Executive Committee.

An accomplished trial lawyer, Ryan has taken more than twenty trials to verdict and litigated countless matters from inception through appeal. Before he was confirmed as United States Attorney, Ryan served for over a decade as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of Alabama and the Northern District of Georgia, where he led and supervised hundreds of investigations and prosecutions spanning a wide range of critical areas.

Ryan began his private practice career as an associate at McGuireWoods. Before first joining McGuireWoods, Ryan clerked for United States District Judge Inge P. Johnson (Ret.) of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama.
